Anime Music Videos & Lyrics

I’m often asked “what’s the best way to learn Japanese?” Well, as is the case with everything in life, different people respond differently to different techniques. When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media presenting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, … put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology.
AMVs should not be confused with music videos that employ original, professionally made animation (such as numerous music videos for songs by Iron Maiden ), or with such short music video films (such as Japanese duo Chage and Aska ‘s song ” On Your Mark ” that was produced by the film company Studio Ghibli ). AMVs should also not be confused with fan-made “general animation” videos using non-Japanese animated video sources like western cartoons, or with the practice of vidding in Western media fandom , which evolved convergently and has a distinct history and fan culture.

However, I would argue that AMVs would fail to meet all four fair use criteria, especially with regard to the music 1. The music is not really being transformed 2. The music is a creative work 3. The whole song is used 4. By publishing the entire song on YouTube, you are distributing it to a potential audience of millions.
Anime music videos not only introduced me to anime I would otherwise never have seen, it’s also introduced me to MUSIC that has since become a part of my top playlists. In other words, plenty of people who make anime music videos today do so because they liked watching them.

Usually the track is a song, but there are also videos made for comedic effect that use trailers or comical redubs. The footage that you’re using isn’t yours; it is the rightful property of the animator who has created the anime. Prime members enjoy FREE Delivery and exclusive access to music, movies, TV shows, original audio series, and Kindle books.
The viewing experience of watching an AMV is qualitatively different than either watching the anime by itself or listening to the song by itself, and thus AMVs could still be considered transformative and likely fair use. Pokémon Karaokémon was the last segment to feature music videos due to the lack of English anime music soundtracks being produced from there on after.
The rise of digital video on computers has completely transformed the popularity of AMVs. Masking: This style requires the editor to remove the background from the anime scene they would like to add effects to. It is a painstaking and time-consuming process. This is something that can be difficult to achieve with music videos, as often the action distracts from the song itself.

Regardless of why people make AMVs, I can certainly tell you why we appreciated them so much back in the day. Is a huge collection of song lyrics, album information lyrics video’s and featured video clips for a seemingly endless array of artists — collaboratively assembled by our large music community and contributing editors.
