Gouache Landscape Art Painting

If you’ve ever tried watercolor painting (or even looked into it), chances are you’ve encountered the word gouache at some point along the way. On the other hand, when we work with acrylics or oils, we can certainly lay down subsequent layers of paint to add to or further enhance the look of previous layers, but it will be impossible to modify the layers in and of themselves once they’ve dried.
I find that as I am working an area and the pigment is beginning to dry on my palette, a dip of the brush into water, pigment, and across a dry paper towel results in the desired solution of paint with the added bonus of also being able to repoint my brush all in one move.

Even the most complicated painting must start somewhere, and for this city landscape, instructor William Bill” Dunn begins with the basics: how to get a good sketch without over-cluttering the composition , and how to simplify this busy scene without accidentally taking out the busy” atmosphere.
However, to solve the problem of the base paint mixing with the diluted paint as the glaze is brushed on. I spray a single layer of fixative (the same stuff used on pencils, chalk, and pastels to keep them from smearing) over the work and let it dry.

Chalk is sometimes added to give the paint extra heft or body, and certain varieties add propylene glycol as well; traditional gouache tends to become brittle when it dries, and the extra additive attracts water to help paint layers stay more flexible over the long term.
In some cases glycerin and preservatives are also mixed in. The principle differences between transparent watercolors and opaque is the addition of a chalky substance and the amount of gum arabic; gouache contains a higher concentration of the latter.
In art , the term painting describes both the act and the result of the action. I remember toning down, or changing the temperature of an acrylic painting by going over it with a thin wash. Someone mentioned your name in our Gouache Corner” on the Wet Canvas web site and I decided to look you up. I would say we seem to be kindred spirits in our painting philosophy.

40 The resulting work often emphasizes the physical act of painting itself as an essential aspect of the finished work or concern of its artist. It is loaded with practical instruction, color photos of paintings and demonstrations. If the underlying colour shows through when you don’t want it to, let it dry and go over it again, possibly with stronger, less watery paint.
There is no white watercolor paint that can create a highlight or a white as vibrant as the natural color of the paper. You can also add gouache on top of dark colors unlike watercolor, where it is impetrative to work from light to dark. Because gouache is thicker and more opaque than watercolor, it will add a bold, sharp punch to closer elements, creating the illusion of these being closer to the viewer.

While the layers on the buildings dry, you can start painting the streets and roads. It is similar to acrylic or oil paints in that it is normally used in an opaque painting style and it can form a superficial layer. Lately I have come to realize that I also paint out of a sense of gratitude for living where I do, for the gifts of the natural world, and for being able to restore habitat to my part of the world.
A water-based paint with a matt finish, and a first cousin of watercolour, gouache can be used in a variety of ways, and in many respects falls halfway between watercolour and oils as a painting medium. I’ve painted in the Southwest, but the landscape doesn’t speak to me. It’s too dry and powdery.

Same pear painted with both watercolor and gouache. The second reason has two inherent issues that arise with shipping paintings under glass. I have suspended my use of masonite until I decide if I want to spend the time doing extensive prep work prior to starting a painting.
